From this past Sunday, spent at the small but densely packed Mystic Masque: Semblance and Reality in Georges Rouault at Boston College.

I agree with Bethea. I liked the clown best, very scruffy and strong.

Any words on Basel? Any suggestions on galleries to visit?

I'm assuming people are talking about the second clown. The first one is more reminiscent of Bernard Buffet.

I'm heading to Basel tonight and expect the usual drek sprinkled with a handful of gems. The few that I like usually make the trip worth it. I'll report back tomorrow.
As for galleries. The "Current" exhibition at 2412 North Miami aveenue has quite a bit of good work. You'll find one of Darby's new paintings, some of Kathleen Staples, Tutua, Sean, and others.

The Roualt images remind me of a show that's up now at the University Art Gallery in downtown New Bedford, Ma. : Danish artist Richard Winther, 1924-2007. Our neighbor, Lasse Antonsen, curated the show and runs the gallery. Franklin, since you're in Boston, if you e-mail me sometime I'll let you know of events down here and would love to meet you. There's a lively local scene and Lasse runs a world class gallery, pulling in really unusual things on a tight budget, and he often gives public lectures, which are wonderful.

Strong drawing Franklin, a lot of strength and energy. I especially like clown and the last three.
