Sorry for the silence

When one feels under the weather, spending some time on a diverting project can have a salutary effect. And so I did.
I will now answer e-mails and write about art and the like.

From a Miami Herald article by Brett Sokol on the Miamians in the latest Whitney Biennial:
While many critics have griped that some corners of her Biennial resemble a hurricane-smashed Home Depot, [Shamim] Momin remains unapologetic.
''I think there's a lot of sentimentality in critics of a certain generation,'' she counters. ``They have a romantic idea of what art should be: The good old days when dudes slapped paint on a canvas.''
So there you have it. Now you can stop worrying and learn to love the bomb, just like Dr. Strangelove. I'm so relieved.

Why is it that people always have to smack painting and use it as the scapegoat in order to defend their selections for an exhibition? I suppose it is because she (like others) was a lazy mediocre art student and painting was hard. I know a lot of people who became dealers, curators, photographers, conceptual and film artists because they just couldn’t draw or paint. I would like to ask these people to, please, please don’t blame painting….at least try to be more original and creative when explaining your selections for a show.

Well, Mystified, it's a very handy and expedient punching bag. The fact such a position is essentially bogus and disingenuous is not a deterrent, because it's now totally the norm to be bogus and disingenuous. Nobody seriously expects it to be otherwise; they just disguise it with BS, and there's a kind of honor system: you don't call me on my BS and I won't call you on yours.

This is nice, though it would be nicer if I lived in LA. I especially like how it loads with listing by end date.
Can one search by artist name? I guess another feature might be to have them grouped geographically...
