from the division of cultural affairs

The Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs newsletter arrived today. I am now apprised of the following:

  1. The DCA website is vomitously ugly.
  2. “...Florida⤁s state lawmakers passed a budget on May 27th for fiscal year 2003-2004, allocating $5,865,000 for the grants programs of the Division of Cultural Affairs. With an additional $200,279 from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Division⤁s grants budget for the upcoming year is $6,065,279. The budget … represents a decrease in funding from the $32 million that cultural organizations received last year….” Translation: Governor Jeb Bush, who oversaw the bungled election that coincidentally put his brother into the office of the President of the United States, has now overseen a $26 million, 80% die-off of arts funding.
  3. “The Services to Individual Artists Subcommittee met in Orlando on June 1st to begin the process of identifying ways to best meet the needs of artists in Florida. Information on the subcommittee can be found on the Division⤁s website at: (here).” Translation: the Subcommittee to Fix a Grant Program That Wasn’t Broken now has a website full of committee-speak that will put you to sleep like a narcoleptic puppy on Quaaludes. In the meantime, no one will be getting any money.
