guarda at tachmes, salter at ambrosino

Post #530 • May 4, 2005, 1:58 PM • 6 Comments

Two veiws of Rebecca Guarda's installation of little paintings at Leonard Tachmes (site seems to be down).

Michael Salter at Ambrosino. Most of these are constructed digitally and mounted on aluminum with a floor laminate varnish, or reverse mounted to plexi. Vector graphics are a precisionist's dream come true, and many of these were likable if a little slick. The slickness worked well for the portraits in locked glass cases, which made the subjects look psychologically fragile and seemed to emphasize their neurosis.

Yeah, seems kind of pointless and insipid.

Why would anyone rip off Alex Katz? That's like borrowing money from a beggar.

I like the Salters better than Katz. I have some kind of irrational hatred of Katz, for some reason. I've long felt that Katz has no business using paint, and these digitally produced things sort of prove it - I find their mechanically hard edges more authoritative.

i didn't see them in person, but the salters don't look katz-y to me at all. on the positive side, the frame-of-a-comic sensibility works well for me, but on the negative side, the slickness is almost too distracting.

back to business: i came here to post a link to a NYFA current article that seems relevant to a lot of recent discussion around here:

On lighter tone... look to the West, rough words innterview but cutting to the crux, watch out for those expletives regarding the bad art.
