This is one of the best parodies of a great work of art I've ever seen - all in the service of making fun of one of the most deserving targets for parody in modern times.
This month, the Kansas State Board of Education gave preliminary approval to allow teaching alternatives to evolution like intelligent design (the theory that a smart being designed the universe). And President Bush and Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee both gave the thumbs up to teaching intelligent design.
Long before that, Bobby Henderson, a 25-year-old with a physics degree from Oregon State University, had a divine vision. An intelligent god, a Flying Spaghetti Monster, he said, "revealed himself to me in a dream."
You probably see where this is going. From Mr. Henderson's website:
Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.
Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, or as some of its adherents call it, Pastafarianism, is loads cooler than that other religion promoting whatever they're calling that creationism crap these days.
WHY YOU SHOULD CONVERT TO FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTERISM
- Flimsy moral standards.
- Every friday is a relgious holiday. If your work/school objects to that, demand your religious beliefs are respected and threaten to call the ACLU.
- Our heaven is WAY better. We've got a Stripper Factory AND a Beer Volcano.
On the website, one supporter writes:
As a former art historian, I must say that FSM wins hands down over ID when it comes to the complexity of its iconography. ID has produced little aesthetic response to its point of view. FSM on the other hand has stimulated a spontaneous outpouring of highly expressive art. --Laura Jones, PhD
But don't take Dr. Jones's word for it - see for yourself. I'm totally buying the t-shirt.

I hope everyone has seen The Onion's coverage (paralleling the Intelligent Design Theory) of the "Intelligent Falling Theory", which refutes Newton's Theory of Gravity... I mean, things just can't FALL! Somebody's gotta make that happen!

BoingBoing has kept me pretty up to date on the FSM controversy. My favorite is when they promised to pay $250,000 to anyone who can produce empirical evidence which proves that Jesus is not the son of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
